(원어민 문법강의) 형용사절 - The Adjective Clause (Relative Clause) (Adam)

영어에서 주절(independent clause)과 종속절(dependent clause)을 연결하는 역할을 접속사(conjunctions)와 관계사(relatives)가 하는데요... 사실 relatives도 큰 의미에서는 conjunctions에 속한답니다.

관계사가 이끄는 절(adjective or relative clause)은 한정적용법(defining)과 서술적용법(modifying)이 있다고 배웠죠?

defining은 컴마(,) 없이 앞에 나오는 명사에 필수적인 요소로서 그 명사에 대한 information을 제공해주지만,

modifying은 컴마를 수반하며 부차적인 정보, 즉 생략해도 문제가 되지 않는 정보를 제공하는 절입니다.

다만, 컴마 다음에 which가 오는 절(situational clause)에서는 이따금씩 앞 절 전체나 그 상황을 지칭하고 있음을 주의해야 해요.
