서술형-요약문 해결 비법(영어서술형-이혜영샘)

서술형 1. 다음 글의 내용을 한 문장으로 요약하고자 한다. 빈 칸 (A)와 (B)에들어갈 말을 본문에서 찾아 각각 한 단어로 쓰시오. (단 필요 시 어법에 맞게 형태를 바꿀 수 있음) [능률 I, 1과 Supplementary Reading]

In 1968, Professor Robert Rosenthal fromHarvard University and Lenore Jacobson, who had been an elementary schoolteacher, carried out an experiment. They first gave an IQ test to students andthen chose some of them. Theygave the list of the students to teachers, saying that those students wereexpected to show remarkable progress. Eight months later, they testedall the students again and found out that those who were in the list hadimproved a lot on the test.

형광펜으로 치어진 부분은 변형된 부분이다.

교과서 원문은 They gave the list of the students to teachers, saying that those students were more likely to show the bigger improvement. 이다. 원문의 마지막 부분에 improvement라는 단어가 사용되어 있는 것을 기억한다면, 요약문 빈칸 (B)의 improvement는 쉽게 추측할 수 있다.

또한 교과서 원문에서 주어진 글에 이어지는 다음 문장은 The teachers' expectations of those students had played a major role in this change. 이다.

즉, 위에 제시된 문제는 변형된 문장의 원문과 다음에 이어질 문장에서 각각 한 단어씩 데리고온 요약문이다.

[비법연구2 ]  교과서에서 지문을 요약해 놓은 "요약문장"에 집중하자

주어진 문장 다음에 이어지는 원문이 위 실험에서 얻게된 결과라는 것을 알 수 있다. 즉, 실험내용을 한 문장으로 요약 압축한 문장이다. 이런 형태의 문장은 서술형으로 자주 출제되는데, 다음과 같은 형태로 출제되기도 한다.

서술형 2. 다음 글의 요지를 주어진 조건에 맞게 완성하시오. [능률 II, 1과 본문]

Effective learning is closely related withyour emotions. When you feel excited about what you’re learning and happy aboutthe progress that you have made, you give a tremendous boost to your ability tolearn. 능률 English II의 1과 지문은 효율적으로 공부하는 방법에 대한 설명을 3~4가지 나열한 후, 마지막 문단에서 전체 내용을 summerize하는 방식으로 전개된다. 주어진 지문은 교과서  25페이지에 나와있으며, 이 글의 소제목은 Stay Motivated라고만 적혀있다. 따라서 많은 학생들이 add A into B를 사용하여 어떻게 영작해야 하는지 주어진 글에서 힌트를 찾기 위해 머리를 싸매고 연구했을 것으로 보인다. 그런데 교과서 26페이지에서 전체 지문을 모두 요약해놓은 To summarize~라고 시작하는 지문을 살펴보면

To summerize, keep your body resistant to stress by getting plenty of exercise and sleep. Learn by gathering a broad overview of a subject before breaking it down into smaller tasks that you can manage. Always be attentive by focusing on what you study. Stay motivated by adding your actions and emotions into your learning. You can learn more efficiently by following these strategies, and learning will actually become fun.

고민할 필요 없이 교과서에 나온 문장을 그대로 써주기만 하면 되는 문제였던 것이다. 단, 그 문장이 주어진 글과 좀 떨어져 있을 지라도 주어진 글의 요약문이라는 것을 파악하고 있었다면 말이다.

오늘의 교훈

1. 교재 원문을 충실하게 공부하자  - 문제가 변형되도, 결국 거기서 나온다.

2. 본문을 요약해 놓은 요약문장에 집중하자 - 요지, 요약, 주장 등 다양한 문제가 서술형으로 대거 등장한다.
